An exquisite coastline, spectacular historic monuments, compelling cities, impressive mountains, vast river deltas and distinctive ethnic minorities – Vietnam has it all. Cruise in a wooden junk around the fairy-land of limestone pinnacles in Halong Bay; stay in a traditional stilt house in the beautiful Mai Chau Valley; and don a conical hat for a cycle ride through the luminous green paddy fields of the Mekong Delta.
An obligatory stop on any tour of Southeast Asia are the magnificent ruins of Angkor Wat, but Cambodia has a lot more going for it than its world-famous temple complex. The country’s rapidly-evolving capital, Phnom Penh, holds the resplendent Silver Pagoda. Highlights further afield include the dazzlingly white, laid-back beaches of Sihanoukville, and elephant treks to tribal villages around Sen Monorom.
Land-locked Laos has retained the kind of traditional atmosphere and lifestyles fast disappearing from the rest of Indochina. Its main highlight, which you can reach by boat along the Mekong River, is the wonderful town of Luang Prabang, where long lines of saffron-robed monks collect donations of rice from kneeling locals each morning, against a backdrop of golden-roofed temples, monasteries and forested mountains.
