Unless you fly direct to your holiday destination, most outward legs to Asia pause briefly in a Middle Eastern city to re-fuel or change planes. Increasingly, TransIndus clients are taking the opportunity to “jump ship”, and explore some of the beautiful countries they may have glimpsed from an aircraft window on previous forays east.
The most popular, by a long chalk, is Jordan – thanks to the presence amid its sandstone desert hills of an extraordinary vestige of the ancient world: Petra. With their delicately carved facades, tombs and temples, the remains of the fabled rose-red city are every bit as enchanting as their reputation suggests, but Jordan holds many other attractions deserving further exploration, from the curative waters of the Dead Sea, to the amazing Roman ruins of Jerash.
If you’ve ever flown over the Persian Gulf, you’ll know how exceptionally beautiful its western shores are, and they only improve on closer inspection. Long gold-sand beaches and fringes of turquoise water line the coasts of both the United Arab Emirates and Oman, whose cosmopolitan, rapidly expanding capitals hold some of the world’s most glamorous hotels and resorts. In a few days’ stay, you can haggle for frankincense in the souks of Abu Dhabi, gaze at the mind-bogglingly modern skyline of Dubai on an evening dhow cruise, or head off into the Empty Quarter of Salalah in Oman for a taste of some truly rugged desert scenery.
