Sri Lanka's capital Colombo is a bustling and chaotic city, quite different from the pace of the rest of the island. Its historical centre is the colonial Fort, built by the Portuguese as a fortress with many of its grand buildings coming from the Victorian period.
A short distance from Fort is the frantic Pettah bazaar, a district full of energy and small shops packed with anything you could possibly wish to buy. Exploring the gridlocked streets of Colombo is a great experience and a sensory bombardment of noise, smells and colours.
South of Pettah and Fort, facing the Indian Ocean, is Galle Face Green. Originally created in 1859 the green open space is highly popular with Colombo's residents who come out en masse in the cool evenings to play cricket, fly kites or just stroll along the seafront promenade.
