Dhows have been used for centuries by merchants and fishermen in the Persian Gulf. These days, they tend to be fitted with diesel engines rather than traditional lateen sails, and evening cruises around the harbour to gaze at the city skyline by night are to be the order of the day rather than trips into the open sea. However, islands off shore may also sometimes be visited for a spot of wild swimming, diving and snorkelling.
