Jaipur is often dubbed as ‘the Pink City’, after the terracotta pigment which enlivens its walled centre. When it was originally laid out, however, Jaipur was painted a more regular off-white. Only in 1856, to mark the visit of Prince Albert , was the trademark peach colour applied – pink being the traditional hue of hospitality. The city’s USP really comes into its own during the so-called ‘golden hour’ before sunset, when the elaborately decorated facades form a glowing backdrop to the frenetic street life below. Hilltop forts, cenotaphs, temples and textile dyers’ colonies provide a plentiful supply of enjoyable daytrips in the area.
