Kalaw attracts more than its fair-share of backpackers thanks to its proximity to Inle lake, which can be trekked to in a few days via a string of fascinating minority villages. The hill station was originally developed by the British as a retreat from the sweltering heat at sea level. Sitated at an altitude of 1320m, it enjoys a refreshingly cool climate, as well as expanse views over ranks of forested mountains.
