Northern Vietnam largely gets missed by most travellers to the country; most visitors head to Hanoi, Halong Bay, and Sapa, but few head west of Hanoi. Just three hours’ drive west of the capital, is the town of Mai Chau. Nestled on flat plains flanked by giant karst rock formations, Mai Chau rather resembles an inland, dry version of Halong Bay.
Lush green paddy-fields as far as one can see, meet awesome rock-faces towering into the blue sky. Time can be spent exploring the villages on foot or bicycle, and meeting the inhabitants, mainly the ethnic minority White Thais, who in-fact speak a language very similar to that of nearby Thailand.
If one has the time, we would highly recommend visiting Mai Chau, particularly if you are unable to go as far north as Sapa. You are sure to see fewer tourists here, and receive a friendly welcome from the locals. Recommended is the Mai Chau Lodge, a comfortable small hotel which offers excursions to nearby villages and caves, or simply, bicycles for you to explore at your own leisure. There are also home-stay options in the area for the adventurous.
