An estimated 1700 tigers survive in the wild in India (one half of the world’s total population) but you’ll have to travel to some of the country’s most remote regions to catch sight of one. Safaris are generally conducted in Jeeps or open-topped mini-buses in parks such as Bandhavgarh and Kanha in Madhya Pradesh, which boast among the highest density levels of any Indian sanctuary. Kaziranga in Assam is another tiger hot spot, with the additional attractions of rare one-horned rhinos and the safaris on elephant back.
