When To Go To Japan![]()
It is possible to visit Japan throughout the year, depending in part on what you wish to do there. The vistas change considerably with the seasons and this may influence when you choose to go. As the Japanese archipelago stretches some 3000km the climate varies considerably, the north being cooler and the south hotter. The Japanese are proud of their four 'distinct' seasons, which by and large (on the major four islands) match those of the UK. Winter is generally colder than the UK and certain sections of the country receive a lot of snowfall. This occurs in the northern regions and areas facing the Japan Sea. The Pacific coast side receives occasional snowfall but is blessed with cold, crisp, clear winter days. Summer is generally hot and often humid (with the exception of Hokkaido) and there is a short rainy season beginning around June. This lasts about three weeks and is characterised by cloudy days interspersed with sporadic rain. The end of summer also sees the arrival of occasional typhoons coming in from the Pacific. Spring and autumn are considered the best times to visit Japan due to the mild temperatures, relatively low rainfall and frequent clear days. Spring also features bountiful blossoms, beloved of the Japanese whilst autumn bears witness to the sensational colours of the changing leaves.
