What To See In Laos
Albeit the least developed of the Indochina countries, Laos offers one of the most satisfying travel experiences with much of the country remaining the same as encountered by the early nineteenth century French explorers. Lao people are among the friendliest in Southeast Asia. First time visitors start at Luang Prabang and Vientiane. The World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang with its beautiful temples, traditional houses, night markets and relaxed ambience tempt the traveller to linger on for longer. Vientiane has the unique mixture of French colonial atmosphere and gilded temples, typical of towns in Indochina. For those with more time, the World Heritage Site of Vat Phou temple and a cruise on the Mekong to see the 4,000 Islands are good options. The more adventurous can visit the hill tribes around Luang Namtha in northern Laos, spend time kayaking in Vang Vieng, or explore the Plain of Jars. It is also possible to cruise up the Mekong into Thailand. Laos is easily combined with Vietnam and Cambodia for a more complete visit to Indochina.
