Her family background was originally responsible for Sally Wade-Gery's interest in India (her grandparents spent their lives there, her parents were born there) but it was not until her husband Robert became the British High Commissioner in Delhi that first-hand knowledge replaced family sketchbooks, stories and Kipling. Five eventful years, constant travelling and the making of numerous friends later led to membership of the Calcutta Tercentenary Trust, set up to conserve Lord Curzon's collection of British-Indian pictures in Calcutta and to involvement with the UK Friends of Sewa Mandir, an important rural development foundation in Udaipur.
As a fellow of the London Zoological Society, she is knowledgable about Indian Wildlife in the field and is concerned about its precarious survival. She has led tours for TransIndus since 1993 not only to 'classic' sites but also venturing off the beaten track to Orccha, Mandu, Jaunpur, Chilka and most recently to French Pondicherry and Danish Tranquebar. The Daily Telegraph has promoted 3 of these tours as their Readers Offers.
