The Nilambur School Project

26 Jun, 2012 by Sinna P J

The Nilambur School Project

The Kerala Government is welcoming volunteers for The Nilambur School Project. The programme is aimed at developing students aged 12-13 and 16-17, with an emphasis on protection of child rights and equality. With the help of volunteers, the students will learn to communicate effectively and effortlessly in English.

The programme overview:

The project will run from October 2012 through until the end of January 2013, and volunteers are welcome to work for 2.5 months minimum, to 4 months maximum. Each volunteer will be expected to work 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. On completion of the programme, the government will be happy to offer a week’s tour of Kerala.

Your arrangements:

You will be briefed in Cochin before being taken to a local school for a taster session, to prepare for Nilambur. Nilambur is a town with an agricultural based community; about 5 hours drive from Cochin. After having arrived and toured the school in Nilambur, the best teaching arrangements during your volunteering programme will be decided.

Your accommodation:

This will be arranged for you during your stay, in private houses or in government accommodation. The houses are furnished with either en-suite or common facilities. Transport to the school and for local use will be provided. A cook will be on-hand to make local dishes from market produce …and you’re welcome to join in!

Please note that you will need to arrange your own international flights, and cover costs of any personal expenses and excursions.

Who we are looking for:

You must be able to engage the students in conversational English on a variety of topics, so that the students can hear the language spoken and practice speaking. You must be able to guide the students in written English, and inspire them at the same time. Applicants with teaching qualifications or experience will have preference, though it is not essential.

Further information & to apply:

Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to get in touch. If you would like to apply for the project please send us your CV. Should you have any prior teaching or volunteer experience, please include these details.
