Next week London Coliseum will host five vibrant and stimulating performances of classical Chinese dance, song and music. Shen Yun the New York based performing arts company aims to blend traditional Chinese art forms with a modern twist in order to revive and modernise this style of cultural performance.
The show, which is different every year, will give an insight into the entertainment of 5000 years ago whilst maintaining a relevance to the present day. In keeping with tradition, Shen Yun's performance is a series of short pieces, taking the audience's imagination from high in the Himalayas to the tropical lake-filled regions.
The performers are set to adorn the stage in a plethora of colourful and intricately detailed, handmade costumes reflecting China's social, physical and historical landscape. The orchestra is made up of a blend of Western strings, brass, percussion and woodwind, alongside the sounds of ancient instruments such as the erhu and pipa. Whilst the animated backdrop benefits from twenty-first century technology, as projected images fluidly change the dramatic landscapes behind the performers; transporting the audience to another world.
This is set to be another exhilarating show by the Shen Yun performance company. I hope our team manage to get good seats!
