The 2008 BBC series, Wild China, provoked a great deal of interest in the country’s glorious landscapes, and we’ve since devised many tours based around China’s scenic highlights.

Foremost among them are the mist-shrouded, pine-studded rock towers Zhangjiajie, the subject of many famous medieval ink drawings and scroll paintings, and iconic limestone hills along the Li River near Guilin – the classic ‘willow-pattern’ karst landscape. Less well known outside China are the swirling rice terraces of Longi, the brilliant turquoise lakes of Jiuzhaigou, in Sichuan, and the dramatic scenery of Twelve Sacred Mountains, where dramatic cliffs and forests are embellished with pretty Taoist shrines and temples, creating a uniquely beautiful and quintessentially Chinese landscape easily accessible on foot or via modern elevators and cable cars.

Northern Yunnan is known for its world-class mountain scenery. Tiger Leaping Gorge is the standout attraction here, but it is also worth driving another day to see the serrated, ice-encrusted summits of Kawakwarpo mountain – featured on the wonderful ‘Songtsam Circuit’ of Alpine-style luxury lodges.

Last, but by no means least, there’s Tibet – the highest and wildest of Asia’s mountain kingdoms. Few journeys on the planet boast scenery as awe-inspiring as that of the ‘Friendship Highway’ connecting the capital, Lhasa, with Kathmandu in Nepal. A day’s detour from the road takes you to ultimate viewpoint for the north face of the world’s highest mountain, Everest.
