Muscat’s premier five star occupies its own central stretch of the bay. Unlike most landmark resorts in the Middle East, this one rather hides its light under a bushel. First impressions are of a refreshingly understated, less-is-more reception area and an emphasis on low-rise, traditional, whitewashed, architecture rather than the usual Gulf Bling. Spread over 21 acres of lawns and date palms are 158 rooms and villas separated by courtyards. Most enjoy plenty of private outdoor space, and you’re never far from one of three seductive pools. Of the 9 places to eat and drink, we most like the restaurant overlooking the beach, which specializes in ocean-fresh seafood, prepared by chefs recruited from around the globe. Every few days they also host a stupendous Lebanese buffet – not to be missed.
