Kaziranga National Park, Northeast Hill States, India

Many of our guests rate their stay at this resort as one of the highpoints of their holiday – and not just because of the rhino sightings at nearby Kaziranga. But don’t come expecting lightening wi-fi and plasma TVs.

Wild Grass was the first jungle lodge to open in this area (more than fifty have mushroomed since) and the place has stuck unswervingly to its old-fashioned style. The atmosphere is that of a 1940s country club in charismatic decline. Creaky staircases and corridors lined with Assamese masks lead to the generous-sized guest rooms, most of whose French windows overlook the grounds.

Everything’s clean and comfortable, if a little worn around the edges. Common areas include a dining hall with dark-wood furniture and a lovely verandah where you can settle into a wicker chair for a spot of postcard writing between safaris. And a team of expert, enthusiastic guides are on hand to answer any wildlife-related questions.

Our opinion

Comfortable lodge, basic facilities and good naturalists.
