Astounding views come as standard in Indonesia, and if landscape and nature are the principal focus of your travels, you’ll have plenty to get excited about in the archipelago.
Start with the otherworldly vistas of central and eastern Java, whose swirling rice terraces and exotic ruins are framed by backdrops of volcanoes spewing plumes of smoke and ash. Venture up to the lush, cloud-swept caldera of the Dieng Plateau en route to Ijeng, where you can watch sulphur miners toil in a crater cradling a steaming blue-green lake. Accessible by road, Gunung Bromo is one of three volcanoes in eastern Java – a mesmerizing spectacle at dawn, when the first rays of sunlight burnish its eroded slopes. For a more challenging mountain ascent, consider the three-day trek up Lombok’s Gunung Rinjani (3726m/12,224ft), a smouldering cone of lunar-like rock with a huge overlooking the Java Sea.
Other signature landscapes in Indonesia include the view from the summit of Padar Island, in the Komodo National Park, whose vivid turquoise bays are enfolded by headlands of rock and grass that wouldn’t look out of place in Cornwall. And, last but by no means least, the astonishing karst islets of the Raja Ampat archipelago, accessible on a live-aboard cruise through some of the world’s most pristine marine landscapes.
