With more than 80% of its surface area covered by mountains, Kyrgyzstan is all about dramatic landscapes: giant ice peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, idyllic Alpine meadows and rolling, open grasslands will form the backdrop to your tour.
Although the wildest terrain is only accessible on foot, an amazing amount of world-class scenery can be experienced from road level. Most our trips feature beautiful Song Kul, an altitude lake at enfolded by grassy ridges which can be scaled on foot or horse for a succession of inspirational views. In the northeast of the country, Issuk-Kul is the second largest saline lake in the world after the Caspian Sea, and forms an arresting spectacle with a backdrop of snow-capped summits. From its southern shore, you can head deeper into the Tian Shan range to visit iconic Jety Orguz Gorge, and its red-tinted ‘Seven Bulls’ rock formations.
The icing on the cake of any landscape-focussed tour of Kygyzstan, however, has to be the helicopter ride to South Inylchek Base Camp. Most days in summer, a Russian military chopper ascends to this this spot in the lap of the Tian Shan range, giving easy access to one of the most astounding mountain panoramas on the planet: a grandstand view of Khan Tegri (7,010m) and Pobeda (7,439m).
