The concept of luxury train travel originated in America during the mid-19th century, when George Mortimer Pullman developed the sleeping car for the American Pioneer railroad company. India’s Maharajas were quick to pick up on the trend, and their opulent carriages provided the inspiration for a revival in the 1990s, when journeys in sumptuous railcars were created specifically for tourists.
Since then, five different luxury lines have been inaugurated by Indian Railways, along with the Eastern and Oriental Express service between Bangkok and Singapore, and several deluxe excursion trains in Japan. TransIndus are proud to serve as agents for all of these wonderful services, along with a more recent discovery of ours, the Golden Eagle’s Persian Odyssey line between Moscow and Iran.
As well as evoking the romance and elegance of rail travel in bygone eras, luxury trains offer an exceptionally comfortable way to see a country. Private compartments mean you can expect a good night’s sleep, and gourmet food is served in spacious, beautifully designed restaurant cars. Some also boast bars, libraries and glass-domed observation decks.
Another reason for their popularity is that, unlike airplanes, luxury trains make stops at places of interest along their route, allowing passengers to see a lot more of the country (or countries) they travel through.
