8 days from £1900 per person
Places Visited: My Tho, Cai Be, Chau Doc, Phnom Penh, Tonle River, Kampong Chhnang, Khmpong Cham, Siem Reap
Travel from Saigon to Siem Reap on this seven-night cruise. Highlights include witnessing daily life in a tribal village, visiting beautiful monasteries, learning about the silk weaving process, and an excursion to the Twin Holy Mountains. This tour is an ideal way of connecting with the locals and the exotic cultures of the East, whilst exploring the main sites, and enjoying the relaxed pace of a cruise.
About the ship
The RV Mekong Pandaw received a full refit in September 2013. The number of cabins has been reduced to just twenty-four, making way for a much enlarged spa, new gym, lecture and movie theatre, art gallery, fair-trade-shop and library on the lower deck. Pandaw is providing pre-programmed iPads with new one-touch applications to its guests on the RV Mekong Pandaw: itineraries, meal and spa menus, information on river stops, weather forecasts, skype, e-postcards, movies, e-books and internet access.
Ho Chi Minh City, My Tho
Transfer from your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City to the port of My Tho to embark on the cruise.
Cai Be, Sa Dec
In the morning, visit Cai Be and its colourful floating market. In the afternoon take an exciting Sampan boat excursion to Sa Dec via Vinh Long, along canals and backwaters. See the local market and ancient house of Mr Huyn Thuy Le - the 'lover' of Marguerite Duras, a famous French novelist.
Visit a Cham tribal village, a catfish farm, and enjoy a trishaw ride round Chau Doc. Return to the ship by boat for lunch before heading for the Cambodian border.
Visit Phnom Penh where you will be provided with your own private cyclo. In the afternoon, there is an optional excursion (by coach) to the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge's grim Tuol Sleng or S21 detention centre. This tour is included in the cost of your cruise but must be requested at the time of booking.
Tonle River, Kampong Chhnang
Excursion up the Tonle River to Kampong. Beyond Kampong Chhnang travel by the Pandaw Explorer to discover the vast wetlands.
We stop at the little-known Chong Koh silk-weaving village for a morning walk at leisure. In the afternoon we stop at Peam Chi Kang village to visit the monastery and school.
Visit the hilltop temple of Wat Hanchey in the morning. In the afternoon, travel by bus to visit the Twin Holy mountains of Phnom Pros and Phnom Srey (Man and Woman Hill). Continue to the ecotourism village of Choeungkok, supported by the NGO Amica.
Early morning coach transfer to your hotel in Siem Reap. Arrive at Siem Reap mid afternoon.
