The future certainly looks promising for this proud nation, whose Khmer monuments alone ensure its position at the forefront of Indochina’s booming tourist industry.
Chief among its historic vestiges, of course, is Angkor Wat, the colossal temple complex assembled by the Khmer kings in what is now the north of Cambodia. Nearly everyone who visits the country travels to this see this extraordinary campus of ancient shrines, and with good reason. But TransIndus tours also feature trips to less known sites in the area such as Prasat Preah Vihear, where a breathtaking fortress-palace crowns the top of a sheer-sided granite plateau.
Elsewhere in the country await miles of beautiful, relatively undiscovered tropical beaches, jungle hills, lakes with floating villages, elephants and amazing waterfalls – in short, attractions comparable to those of neighbouring Vietnam and Thailand, but with only a fraction of the number of visitors.

Travel highlights for Cambodia

Battambang
One of the most scenic drives in Cambodia leads from Siem Reap to Battambang, on the banks of the Sangker River. This venerable old city holds a bumper crop of colonial-era architecture, ranging from antique shophouses in the market district to stately

Koh Ker and Beng Mealea
Koh Ker’s Prasat Thom temple (125km/75 miles northeast of Siem Reap), rises in awesome fashion from the surrounding jungle, its platforms draped in weeds and sides streaked by rain wash. A flight of steps leads to the top for a spectacular view over the surrounding countryside.

Prasat Preah Vihear
This wonderful temple in the far north of the country may see barely a fraction of the visitors its big cousins at Angkor receive each year, but the site occupies a truly astonishing position

Phnom Penh
The Cambodian capital doesn’t feel in quite so much of a rush to embrace the future as its counterparts elsewhere in Southeast Asia. High-rise buildings are beginning to spring up, but they’re still outnumbered by colonial-era shophouses and the flaking facades of French-style villas.

Phnom Kulen National Park
For a total change of atmosphere, we recommend a trip along the bumpy road leading north from Angkor for an hour and a half to the forested Phnom Kulen hills, a tract of steep-sided

Kep
By far the loveliest most relaxing coastal retreat in the country is Kep, a town originally founded by the French in 1906, and which has since become popular among wealthy city dwellers, who travel here on weekends in search of the famous local peppered crab.

Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville, aka ‘Kompong Som’, was dug out of the jungle in the late-1950s to create the country’s first deep-water port, which Cambodia needed so its trade could bypass neighbouring Vietnam.

Siem Reap
A provincial market town until the tourism explosion of the post-Pol Pot era, Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor. Over a million visitors pour through here each year and most stay in or around the town.

Mondulkiri
As the most sparsely populated province in Cambodia it is difficult not to feel relaxed and a million miles away from the stresses of modern life in Mondulkiri. To the west, visitors find rolling hills carpeted in lush forestation, which gives way to rich red soil.
