Places Visited : Bagan, Sagaing, Mingun, Sin Kyun Village, Mandalay

Named after the beautiful Ananda Temple in Bagan, Ananda also translates in Sanskrit as 'extreme happiness' - one of the highest states of being.

The 21 suite Sanctuary Ananda offers a choice of itineraries ranging from shorter trips which can be booked as part of a wider Burma tour to longer exploration cruises for river cruise lovers. It offers guests an authentically Burmese, yet exclusive experience, in line with Sanctuary Retreats’ 'Luxury, Naturally' philosophy.

Remember, this trip can be personalised to suit your travel needs - we can tailor everything from hotel, travel type, duration and more.

Suggested itinerary

Day 1
Bagan

Board the Sanctuary Ananda and settle into your cabin before lunch. In the afternoon there'll be a trip to Bagan to explore some of the most important temples and pagodas among the 2,000 within this magnificent archaeological site - Ananda Temple, Htilominlo Temple and Pyathatgyi Temple where you'll stay for sunset.

Day 2
Bagan, Sagaing

Early this morning there are two optional excursions on offer - a balloon ride over Bagan (additional charge) or sunrise meditation at one of the temples. After breakfast there's a trip to a local market, Nyaung Market, followed by the sacred Buddhist Shwezigon Pagoda. Once everyone is back on board the ship will set sail for Sagaing. A choice of lectures and demonstrations are on offer during the afternoon or simply relax on board. In the evening there'll be sunset cocktails followed by dinner on a sandbank.

Day 3
Sagaing, Mingun

This morning the ship sails for Ava, an ancient imperial capital. There's plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or take a meditation or yoga class on board. After lunch visit the monasteries and pagodas of Bagaya, Sagaing and Amarapura by horse and cart or coach. Visit local silversmiths and textile workshops before heading to U Bein Bridge for drinks at sunset. This evening there's a farewell dinner on the sandbank overlooking Mingun, followed by a traditional musical performance.

Day 4
Sin Kyun Village, Mandalay

For those who wish, an early morning visit to the village of Sin Kyun is offered. This wonderful community will show you the typical life of the villagers and see a way of life seldom viewed by outsiders. Arrive in Mandalay and disembark the ship.
