Kalaw, Myanmar, Myanmar (Burma)
If you’ve come to Kalaw in search of some old-fashioned British charm, you’ll love the Amara. With its half-timbered cottages, four-posters, stripped wood floors and open fires, it resembles somewhere in Shropshire the Famous Five might have taken a holiday in the 1930s (only with a rather incongruously modern spa and wifi connection!). Be prepared for the cold if you travel here in the winter months: hot-water bottles and extra blankets are de rigeur. Made from ingredients grown in the hotel’s own vegetable garden, and served al fresco by lantern light around a warm brazier, meal times are a definite highlight.
