The art of printing patterns and motifs on cotton using carved wood blocks is a Rajasthani tradition that is thriving in the modern era, thanks to a rise in the popularity of ‘ethnic’ clothing in India. It originated in Jaipur under royal patronage and the capital is still the best place both to see the craft in action, and to shop for block-printed goods.

The most famous outlet of all, of course, is Anokhi – the international chain that originated in Jaipur and still produces its cloth and clothing in a factory on the outskirts. The flagship store on Prithviraj Marg is not to be missed.

The founders of Anokhi have also set up a small museum in a restored haveli beneath Amber Fort, where you can see some superb examples of antique block-printing, and see a craftsman at work.
