Hindu pilgrims descend in their largest numbers on the temple at Kaniyakumari during the full-moon phase of April, when it’s possible to see the setting sun and rising moon on the same horizon. Off-shore, a pair of rocks ringed by foaming surf support two more objects of great veneration: the domed memorial to the great 19th-century sage and social reformer, Vivekananda; and to its right, a colossal, 41-metre/133-foot stone statue of the Tamil saint, Tiruvalluva, erected in 2000. It rises from the exact spot where the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean are believed to converge.
