Majorda, Goa Holidays, India

Our current favourite resort in Goa is the beautiful Alila Diwa. Although only a short transfer from the airport, it occupies its own serene, green oasis amid the paddy fields and coconut groves of the coastal belt. The architecture takes its cue from the Portuguese-influenced mansions found in the neighbourhood, with a dash of Balinese tropical chic. Extensive use has been made of local red laterite stone, coconut wood and terracotta tiles to create an earthy, Indian feel. The interiors are more sleek and contemporary, but no less soothing, with darkwood furniture offset by pale walls. Best of all though, is the hotel’s lovely infinity pool, which is among the finest in Asia. Ironically, it’s barely required. Right on the doorstep lie miles of empty golden sand and surf that are safe for bathing. At low tide, grab a cycle and pedal south to Benaulim. Or explore the winding lanes around the hotel, where you’ll see water buffalo lazing in lotus ponds and toddy tappers collecting sap from the palm trees.
