Dharamsala, Indian Himalayas, India

Located close to the Norbulingka Institue for Tibetan arts and Dalai Lama’s residence, Chonor House is the place to stay in Dharamsala. Set under old cedar trees beside a pretty garden, it was designed by a British architect and has been beautifully decorated by local Tibetan artisans.

Colourful Buddhist murals, appliqué work and carved-wood furniture add a dash of romantic Himalayan character to the rooms, which have great views over the valley and surrounding snow peaks from their balconies. Also on site is a cosy restaurant serving authentic mountain cuisine, including delicious steamed momos and hearty Tibetan thukpa stew.

Our opinion

A simple guesthouse with clean en suite facilities and wonderful mountain views.
