Shimla, Indian Himalayas, India

An institution in Shimla since the 1920s, Clarke's was the first hotel ever owned by a certain Mr Oberoi, who named it after its former British owners.

If you’re travelling to the town for its old-world atmosphere, this is the place to stay. It’s just off the Mall, and although the carpets and furniture have clearly seen better days, the rooms are large, clean and comfortable, and the staff unfailingly helpful.
