Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan, India

Arriving in this heavenly tented camp on the edge of Ranthambore is like stepping back in time to a more gentile era, when Rajasthani princes travelled the country in high style. Ranged around a manicured lawn, the canvas tents are furnished in-period, with wooden beds, lanterns, a dark wood writing desk and rain-water shower creating a delightful 1920s ambience. Meals are served in the main lodge, on tables dressed with white linen and silverware or by the light of hurricane lamps on the terrace. The waiters wear orange turbans and starched cotton uniforms. Guests gather beforehand for a sundowner, and linger around the campfire after dinner to be entertained by a local folk troupe.
