Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India

This desert boutique retreat 55km south of Jodhpur is the latest venture of the family responsible for Rohetgarh. Opened only in 2009, the building is a fantasy fortress of ochre crenellated walls, turrets and pavilions which sit atop a dune above a shimmering expanse of acacia scrub and camel thorn.

It took a hundred labourers, carpenters and artisans two years to complete, and the results are impressive. Inside, nine individually styled suites open on to terraces fitted with their own plunge pools; and the decor, enlivened with vibrant Rajasthani quilts and dhurries, is gorgeous.

Desert treks on beautiful Merwari horses are the signature activity here, but you can also join trips to local Bishnoi villages and learn the culinary secrets of the owner’s mother in special cookery classes.

Our opinion

A stylish retreat offering great insight into rural Rajasthan with luxurious suites and great food.
