Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

Oberoi tend to do luxury on the grandest of scales, but this mock Rajput fort on the outskirts of Jaipur is a more modest affair – in terms of size, if not décor. The whole look of the place is breathtaking. Mughal-style domed cuppolas flank the crenelated entranceway, approached via marble-inlaid terraces and shimmering ponds with fountains.

The rooms all have four-posters, and their own sunken baths looking on to private walled gardens. Or you can upgrade to a princely “tent” in the grounds, complete with embroidered canopies, claw-footed tubs and teak decks to lounge on.

Behind the main building, a stepped pool presides over gardens where delicate chhatris rise from reflection pools and wild peacocks patrol the lawns. Rejuvenation massages and elephant rides to nearby to monuments are among the optional extras on offer.

Our opinion

The stylish Rajvilas set in quiet gardens on the outskirts of the city offer an opulent retreat and is recommended for honeymoons.
