The tiny Emirates of Ajman and Umm Al-Quwain may not be as well known as their larger brother but they're well worth keeping on your radar. Both are noted for the prettiest beaches in the United Arab Emirates and those in the know head for these when looking for serious sun-and-sand relaxation.  White-sand beaches rimmed by some of the nicest beach-front properties, each with a private strip!  Perfect for that much needed R & R at the end of a busy tour of the Emirates.

Although the city centres may be small and sleepy, there are an amazing number of cultural distractions nearby including the Umm Al-Quwain Fort which now houses archaeological collections from the nearby Mowaihat and Al-Dur excavation sites. The archaeological digs themselves deserve a visit to see the beautifully preserved circular tombs of Umm al-Nar and stone houses with hand-painted Umm al-Nar ceramics, together with evidence of a brisk trade with Rome, India and Africa.

The Ajman Dhow Building Yard, where Dhows are still being hand-built using age old traditions, skills and tools make a fascinating excursion for those keen on crafts from the region while a series of island just off the cost provide excellent bird-watching among Umm-al-Qwain’s famous mangroves.

The icing on the cake however are the Hajar Mountain mountains offering an incredible scenery and a serious drop in temperature by several degrees, making any excursion to the mountains most welcoming!  Here the mountain towns of Manama and Masfut offer opportunities for getting your hiking boots on walking the numerous trails.

Best time to visit:
