Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

When it was built in the late-18th century, this elegant former hunting lodge stood amid acacia scrub on the outskirts of Jaipur. It has long since been absorbed into the city’s fringes, but still retains the feel of a serene oasis where guests are treated like royalty. The 19 suites are palatial, and have had a recent revamp featuring bolder colour schemes than they would have in times past: the feel is fresh and contemporary, with extensive use of traditional motifs and materials. We love the stylish cocktail bar, and the top notch courtyard spa. Relax in the afternoon by the garden pool, surrounded by salmon-coloured sandstone, or play a round of croquet on the lawn. In the evening, meals are served al fresco on a raised terrace beneath the stately canopy of a kigelia tree strung with pretty lights. Since they took the property on in 2006, owners Angelique and Pradeep Singh have turned this haveli into one of the most desirable boutique properties in Jaipur. Both are usually on hand with shopping and dining tips for the city.
