Chettinad, South India, India

Visalam, in Kanadukathan, Chettinad, is a beautifully restored mansion that celebrates the region’s architectural and cultural heritage. Built over a century ago by KVAL Ramanathan Chettiar as a gift for his daughter Visalakshi, the house is a poignant symbol of love and tradition. Though seldom used as a family home, its elegance and legacy remain intact.

Distinguished by its showy Art Deco façade, Visalam dates from the 1930s, when it was used for family weddings. The interiors preserve the feel of the period, with high-gloss wood furniture and walls painted in traditional limewash. Now lovingly preserved by CGH Earth, Visalam combines its historic charm with modern comforts. Its intricate woodwork, limewashed walls, and expansive halls reflect the splendour of Chettinad and offer a perfect blend of luxury, history, and authentic local culture that enchants visitors.

You also sample Chettinad’s distinctive regional cuisine in the cosy restaurant and relax by the pool among the modern comforts added to make this a perfect base for explorations of one of the South’s most fascinating districts as you tour the region’s grand mansions, local villages to experience traditional crafts like Atangudi tile-making and weaving. You can enjoy bullock cart rides through farmsteads and cooking classes to master the region's unique, distinctive, fiery cuisine.
