Experience the special atmosphere of Oman’s Wahiba Sands region at this luxury encampment 3 hours drive from Muscat. After turning off the tarmac, you pick your way by 4WD through ranks of towering dunes to reach the property, nestled 11km from the main road – no traffic noise or light pollution at night, just the profound silence of the Arabian Desert.
The tents themselves are well set up: this is the pick of the permanent camps in the region, and every effort has been main to ensure the greatest levels of comfort. Each unit has large Queen-sized beds, en-suite bathrooms with hot-water showers and shaded sitting areas outside. Air-con is also provided, but you’re unlikely to need it at night, when temperatures often require an extra blanket.
The camp’s telescope is on hand for star gazers after dark. Sociable barbeque suppers also provide opportunities to meet other travellers in a pleasant outdoor dining area, where you might enjoy recitals by local Bedu musicians in the evening. Optional extras include dune bashing and camel trips.
