Enfolded by an amphitheatre of honey-coloured mountains, this award-winning resort sits on an immaculate crescent of white sand beside sea the colour of lapis and opal. Delicious local delicacies such as organic, sand-oven-baked lamb and locally caught fish in tahini and lemon sauce are served in a gourmet restaurant by romantic lantern-light in the evenings, under the starriest skies imaginable. Because Zighy is far flung: the nearest airport is in Dubai, a two-hour drive away. The payoff is zero light pollution, no traffic noise and crystal clear sea water that’s perfect for snorkelling and diving. Other activities for the restless include dhow cruises, hiking, mountain biking and a silent, al fresco ‘headphone cinema’ on the beach.
