Sinharaja Rainforest is the only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka and covers an area of over 24,000 acres. It’s worth spending at least a few nights here to get a sense of what the national park can offer.
Rainforest Eco Lodge is the ideal base from which to explore the beauty of the park. Accommodation is in the form of 16 eco chalets made from recycled materials and there is a central main building housing the restaurant, bar and interpretation centre.
Walking is one of the best ways of exploring the flora and fauna of the rainforest and there are plentiful trails. Bird watchers love the park for its 147 recorded species, of which 21 out of Sri Lanka’s 26 endemic birds can be found. There are 500 species of indigenous plant attracting colourful butterflies. Some of the trails can be explored at night where you will hear the sounds of the forest and maybe encounter some of the nocturnal creatures that have made Sinharaja their home.
